Greece – the most underestimated wine nation in Europe
Wine hiking in Greece: There are about 360 grape varieties, between 6000-9000 labels, about 100,000 winegrowers and over 1000 wineries all over Greece! The “Greek wine” sung by Udo Jürgens can now be tasted in traditional Greek wineries on a hiking tour especially organised for wine lovers. Our wineries, where we make several culinary discoveries, are situated between beautiful mountains, crystal clear rivers and dreamy lakes.
We walk through one of the six PDO regions in Northern Greece, the region “Amynteo”, the northernmost wine-growing region of Greece. On more than 500 hectares there are beautiful vineyards between green mountains and deep blue lakes. The grape variety mainly cultivated here is the noble “Xinomavro”, which gains in character over the years.

On our hikes we visit two of seventeen wineries that produce excellent wines and export them to New York to a three-star Michelin restaurant. We get to know the largest national park in Greece in the area of the two Prespa lakes. The environmental protection area for brown bears and wolves, built in the mountains, is another hiking destination. Former circus bears that could no longer adapt to their natural habitat and bears that had to live under inhumane conditions have found refuge here since 1993. Our programme also includes two very special bicycle tours, during which we are invited to take a break and pick mushrooms and herbs.
Other highlights of this trip are the fantastic Dragon Cave, the Gold and Silversmith Museum, bubbling water springs, a guided tour of Kastoria (the stronghold of fur production) and of course Greek traditional insider tip taverns with good food and delicious Greek wine. The Zazari Lake is also very special, with 141 bird species and 150 plant species to be discovered in its surroundings.
We live in a traditional manor house in one of the 10 most beautiful mountain villages in Europe, in the 1350 m high Nymfaio, in a breathtaking natural landscape on the ridge of Mount Vernon. Large mansions, splendid restored villas, picturesque streets and old churches characterize this aristocratic stone village where cars are forbidden. For breakfast we are served excellent regional specialities.
